September Galvanized Sheet Exports Exceeded Expectations: What About October? [SMM Analysis]

SMM, October 28: According to the latest customs data, in September 2024, China exported 1.199 million mt of galvanized sheets, up 11.13% MoM and 20.27% YoY from 996,900 mt in September 2023. From January to September 2024, the cumulative export volume of galvanized sheets was 9.5064 million mt, up 15.58% YoY from 8.2248 million mt in 2023. Overall, the MoM growth in September galvanized sheet exports was significant.

By country, the Philippines imported 121,100 mt of Chinese galvanized sheets in September, accounting for 10.11% of the total exports, ranking first. South Korea imported 107,500 mt, accounting for 8.97%, ranking second. Brazil imported 92,300 mt, accounting for 7.70%, ranking third. The top three countries for galvanized sheet exports in September saw significant changes, with Thailand decreasing significantly in October and Brazil increasing noticeably.

Under the price advantage, China's galvanized sheet exports remained strong, with significant MoM increases in imports by Brazil and Turkey in September, leading to higher-than-expected exports. However, on October 2, Guatemala launched an anti-dumping investigation on galvanized sheets originating from China. In 2023, China's exports of galvanized sheets to Guatemala accounted for 1.28%. Although there has been no significant impact in the short term, the frequent anti-dumping investigations on domestic galvanized sheets this year may pose some resistance to exports in the long term. Considering the historical export trends in the fourth quarter, galvanized sheet exports in October are expected to decline.
